Father of the House

For those that don't know, Father of the House (called "Dean of the House" in Canada) is by tradition, the unofficial honour bestowed upon members of parliament in the Crown Commonwealth who have the longest continuous unbroken record of service in the House of Commons. The current Fathers of the House are Britain's Alan Williams (since 1964), Canada's Bill Blaikie (since 1979), Australia's Philip Ruddock (since 1973) and New Zealand's Prime Minister Helen Clark (since 1981). In New Zealand, Helen Clark is actually known as the "Mother of the House", though the term holds no historical precedence anywhere else. Presumably this is because Helen Clark is the first woman in Commonwealth history to have attained that kind of longevity.

Speaking of longevity, it is the 40th anniversary of Churchill's passing this year, the MP who served as Father of the House from 1959 to 1964. Incredibly, Winston Churchill contested 21 general elections and served in the House of Commons for 64 years! Unbelievable when you think of it - this may very well be the British Commonwealth record, and why we honour him in the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy, as the greatest Parliamentarian of all time.
