Constitutional Vandalism

Having lost the 1999 referendum republicans have devised a plan, or should that be a trick, to achieve their republic. Below is a quote from the Weekend Australian about how this would be done:

The second unbreakable promise of a Beazley government is that it would attempt to introduce a republic. It seems most likely that there would be in the first instance an indicative plebiscite on whether there was majority support for a republic in theory, followed by at least one referendum on the form it might take. The likeliest outcome is that most people would endorse a republic but that no model would receive enough support (the most votes in the most states) to succeed. That would leave us with the existing arrangements in place but terminally undermined. As Australians for Constitutional Monarchy convener David Flint says: "Beazley is a constitutional vandal." What's more, he knows perfectly well that his proposed course of action is a delinquent piece of self-indulgence but he's not going to let that stop him.

This is a very disturbing prospect. With all the media bias the vote on the basic idea of a republic would almost certainly be passed but a subsequent referendum would be defeated. The republicans know this, so why do it? To put it simply, their plan is more long term than that, they know that once a vote of "no confidence" is made on the Australian Constitution it will never recover and down the track they will get their republic.

That is just how much disregard they have for due process and will give you all an idea of what loyal Australians are up against.
