Not a romantic illusion - a romantic fact

Modernists would mock this blog relentlessly for living in the past, for not living in the “real world”. Multiculturalists would sneer at it for rejecting diversity, for not including new immigrants in the national story, as if new immigrants today are being excluded in a way that didn’t exclude them before. Socialists and other levellers would attack it for worshipping social hierarchy and not embracing equality, as if the very presence of Her Majesty goes against our idea of human dignity. Even more enlightened liberals, like prime minister hopeful Michael Ignatieff, would consider it mildly embarrassing – a “romantic illusion”, in a written remark to Robert Conquest, for articulating the concept of an Anglosphere, and the silly idea that the English-speaking peoples have a shared heritage they should particularly embrace and promote.

Those are our challengers. They instinctively oppose or undermine the idea – the historical fact – that we are – all of us – heirs to a thousand year civilization; that we are part and parcel of a continuing heroic narrative that should inspire us and be taught to our children. Yes, our thousand year monarchy is romantic – that’s the point! - but it is not an illusion, nor is it an embarrassing fact. If it is this propensity towards dreaminess that we are attacking, then the hypocrites should dispense with their Trudeauvian fantasy in Canada, and their grand European Project in the United Kingdom. Such utopian idealism cuts both ways, but our fables and legends at least have the merit of being organically rooted in a long and tumultuous history – a real and interesting story not to be forgotten, but to be told again and again.

To be sure, it is always easier to find arguments against the imperfect traditions of human society, to posture as the virtuous champion of human rights, social justice and more inclusive change. But it is deeply misguided to believe that these things are being held back by our heritage. They are not. The long experience and wisdom of tradition has shown a remarkable tendency towards real progress, that the conservative instinct towards prudence and delay and evolution has been the right course for ourselves and for humanity.
