Our new Commander-in-Chief

Tony Blair, the most non-deferential prime minister in British history -- so non-deferential in fact, one gets the distinct feeling the premiership has already been effectively elevated to a kind of President of the United Republic of Great Britain and Northern Ireland -- was speaking at the Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce yesterday (the very one where Harper gave his Churchillian address three months earlier), where he urged Canada to stay the course in Afghanistan for the sake of protecting democracy in the region. While I'm pleased that a British prime minister has found time out of his busy Europhile schedule to wade into Canadian affairs, I must respectively make a couple of observations:

- Canada is not what needs convincing Tony, but your own generals. Recommend you sit down with General Sir Richard Dannatt and get him onboard your government;
- Given that we've lost 42 soldiers there, and ten of the last eleven in September and October alone, we highly urge you to convince your Euro-buddies to step up to the plate and help us out in the South; and
- If protecting democracy is what you are about, please indicate when you will begin protecting Britain's democracy from the insidious clutch of unaccountable Lord High Bureaucrats at the EU. Oh when, Tony? Oh when.
